Social Media Propaganda vs, the 77-Year-Old Truth, Indias Constitution Was a Collective Penance!

(The Constitution of India) India's Constitution in the Making

EDITORIAL OPINION:
Social Media Propaganda vs. the 77-Year-Old Truth: India's Constitution Was a Collective Penance!

At this stage of my life, when I see the new generation deciding the course of history through the small screens of their mobile phones, my heart aches to its core. Today's era has turned into an arena of superficial understanding, half-baked knowledge, and sponsored political narratives on social media. Whenever the subject of our sacred Constitution arises, two utterly irresponsible and false claims float across digital forums:
The first claim: Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar wrote the entire Constitution single-handedly while sitting in an isolated room.
The second, even more malicious claim: Babasaheb had no significant role at all, and he was merely signing drafts prepared by others.
My folded-hands plea to today's youth is simple: do not form opinions based on hearsay or 30-second clips. Visit the official website (The Constitution of India) and turn the pages of the Constituent Assembly Debates as well as Sir B.N. Rau’s book, India's Constitution in the Making. When you read those historical documents, you will find that both these claims collapse like a house of cards. The truth is that India's Constitution was the collective outcome of rigorous deliberations by the 299-member Constituent Assembly, 22 major committees, high-level legal machinery, and the 7-member Drafting Committee—with Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar serving as its undisputed captain and 'Chief Architect'. Why has contemporary politics obscured the roles of Hindus and Muslims on this stage, along with Begum Aizaz Rasul standing against conservative elements within her own Muslim community for the sake of the nation?
Behind the Curtains on This Stage: Two Architects Behind the Scenes Without Whom the Framework Could Not Stand
Until we understand the two legal stalwarts who worked behind the scenes, we cannot comprehend the foundational stones of the Constitution's drafting:
The First Architect — Sir B.N. Rau (Constitutional Advisor): Rau Sahib did not accept a single rupee as salary for this sacred endeavor. He thoroughly examined the constitutional frameworks of democracies across the world, including the United States, Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Gathering experiences from across the globe, it was B.N. Rau who prepared the initial foundational draft in October 1947, comprising 243 articles and 13 schedules.
The Second Architect — S.N. Mukherjee (Chief Draftsman): The monumental task of transforming Rau Sahib’s raw draft and complex legal doctrines into fluent, coherent, and precise statutory language was accomplished by Mukherjee Sahib. Dr. Ambedkar himself acknowledged this with deep emotion in the Constituent Assembly on November 25, 1949, stating that without Mukherjee Sahib's extraordinary drafting skill, this intricate Constitution could never have assumed such an orderly shape.
Who Were the Members of the 7-Member Drafting Committee? The Youth Must Know the Truth Behind Every Player on This Stage!
The 7-member Drafting Committee was constituted on August 29, 1947. Its mandate was to dissect, scrutinize, refine, and adapt B.N. Rau’s preliminary draft according to the pressing realities of the time and the future priorities of an independent India, giving it final form in alignment with Assembly debates. Let us understand the pillars of this committee one by one:
K.M. Munshi (Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi): A distinguished lawyer and eminent literary figure. It was Munshi Ji who described the Preamble of the Constitution as the "Political Horoscope" of India. Serving on the sub-committees on Fundamental Rights and Minorities, he translated the political vision of Sardar Patel and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru into concrete legal language.
Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer: Former Advocate-General of Madras. His mastery over the nuances of citizenship, emergency provisions, and the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court was unparalleled. Babasaheb himself candidly remarked that Alladi Ji was an even greater legal authority than he was.
Sir Syed Muhammad Saadulla: Former Prime Minister (Premier/Chief Minister of the era) of Assam and the sole Muslim member of the Drafting Committee. While the nation was engulfed in the flames of Partition, Saadulla Sahib ensured that the tribal regions of the Northeast (which later formed the foundation of the Sixth Schedule) and the financial interests of minorities were firmly integrated into the mainstream constitutional framework.
N. Gopalaswami Ayyangar: A seasoned administrator and former Prime Minister of Kashmir. He maintained a dual focus: working on legal intricacies within the Drafting Committee while simultaneously handling the escalating Kashmir crisis and drafting the special provisions related to it.
N. Madhava Rao: Former Diwan of Mysore State. When B.L. Mitter had to step down due to severe health issues, Madhava Rao stepped in and played a pivotal role in harmonizing administrative affairs and matters concerning the princely states.
T.T. Krishnamachari: Inducted into the committee in 1948 following the untimely demise of industrialist D.P. Khaitan. He worked tirelessly to consolidate independent India’s financial architecture and center-state economic relations.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar (Chairman): The Chief Architect. It was his duty to stand tall and provide reasoned, unyielding responses to every sharp, adversarial, and complex legal challenge raised on the floor of the House. Embedding the fundamental safeguards of the deprived, the exploited, tribal communities, and women into the very soul of the Constitution was the result of Babasaheb’s intellectual resolve and tenacity.
The Testimony of T.T. Krishnamachari: Why Did Ambedkar Bear the Burden Alone?
The historical truth regarding how the entire responsibility fell squarely on Dr. Ambedkar due to the personal circumstances of other members and national crises was placed on record by T.T. Krishnamachari on the floor of the Constituent Assembly on November 5, 1948:
"The House is perhaps aware that of the seven members nominated by you, one had resigned from the House and was replaced. One died and was not replaced. One was away in America and his place was not filled up, and another person was engaged in State affairs, and there was a void to that extent. One or two people were away from Delhi and perhaps reasons of health did not permit them to attend. So it happened ultimately that the burden of drafting this Constitution fell on Dr. Ambedkar and I have no doubt that we ought to be grateful to him for having achieved this task in a manner which is undoubtedly commendable."
This is precisely why, on November 26, 1949, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, President of the Constituent Assembly, stated unequivocally in his concluding address that appointing Dr. Ambedkar as Chairman of the Drafting Committee was the best and most historic decision the Assembly had made.
Begum Aizaz Rasul’s Decisive Strike Against Divisive Politics
During the making of the Constitution, an inflection point occurred that today’s social media narratives often omit. At that critical juncture, the demand for 'Separate Electorates' along religious lines for Sikhs and Muslims was raised once again by certain leaders—the very poison that had torn the nation apart in 1947.
At that moment, Begum Aizaz Rasul, the only Muslim woman member of the Constituent Assembly, looked conservative leaders of her own community in the eye and took a historic stand. Speaking forcefully in the Assembly, she stated:
"Separate electorate is a suicidal curse which has done tremendous harm to the minority community. It should be buried once and for all."
Begum Rasul’s courage saved the country from further internal fragmentation. Iron Man Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel openly lauded her stance before the entire Assembly.
The Legacy of Justice M. Hidayatullah: Judicial Guardian of the Constitution
The journey of the Constitution did not terminate on November 26, 1949. The role of our jurists in keeping the spirit of this text alive and defending it against authoritarian impulses remains monumental.
Former Chief Justice and Vice President of India, Justice Mohammad Hidayatullah, acted as an unyielding shield protecting civil liberties and fundamental rights against arbitrary state overreach. In the historic 1967 Golaknath v. State of Punjab ruling, Justice Hidayatullah clearly established that Parliament does not possess the power to abridge or extinguish the fundamental rights of citizens. He affirmed that the Constitution is not a stagnant legal code, but a living philosophy that safeguards the freedom of every generation.
Historical Context and Present-Day Narrow Political Expediency
Over my long life, I have witnessed many shifts in politics. Recall the circumstances of 1947: the nation was burning with the horrors of Partition, an invasion through tribal proxies had struck Kashmir, and integrating over 500 princely states was a monumental challenge. In the face of that unprecedented crisis, stalwarts like Sardar Patel, Pandit Nehru, Maulana Azad, Dr. Ambedkar, B.N. Rau, K.M. Munshi, and Saadulla placed the national interest above all personal and ideological divides.
Today, seven decades after Independence, distorting those historical realities for short-term political gain and pitting nation-builders against one another is a betrayal of our forebears' sacrifices.
Our Constitution is not the solitary creation of any single individual. It is the collective national resolve blending the realism of Sardar Patel, the vision of Nehru, the legal dedication of B.N. Rau and S.N. Mukherjee, the parliamentary acumen of Munshi, Iyer, and Saadulla, the courageous foresight of Begum Aizaz Rasul, the judicial guardianship of jurists like Justice Hidayatullah, and the brilliant leadership of its 'Chief Architect', Babasaheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, who wove these threads together. The foremost duty of today’s generation is to remove the lens of partisan politics and accord every architect of our history their rightful honor and respect.
EDITORIAL OPINION:
It is impossible to encapsulate the immense contributions of India’s founders within a single article; hundreds of such names have faded into obscurity amid contemporary political debates on social media.
After reading this article, ask yourselves where we stand today: should we not demand accountability from ourselves and our leaders regarding what the truth actually is versus what is being fed to us? Considering the grave political circumstances at the dawn of India’s Independence, isn't invoking them today purely for partisan attacks akin to repeating past mistakes in the future? And by weaponizing past circumstances to serve short-term political ends, are we not undermining the pursuit of a developed nation and extinguishing the dream of a corruption-free India?
